Frequently Asked Questions

I attended last year, how are these going to be different?

Dr. Marin Bozic has developed a more robust online tool for the Margin Protection Program (MPP). The new tool allows you to enter your farm's data to create a more customized view of how MPP fits with your farm's finances and risk management plan.

Why would I reenroll with MPP when I don't see it working?

MPP is an insurance program intended to help farms during times of financial distress. Just like a car insurance policy or farm insurance policy, the program may not always make a payment. In a time of low milk prices, like 2009, or high feed costs, 2012, MPP will provide coverage to stop your losses.

It is important for producers to balance their coverage and protection level decisions with the cost of premium. What kind of coverage and protection do you need on your farm to survive the difficult years? What can you afford to spend? The answers to these questions will help you determine the best way to utilize MPP.

Why is it important for me to bring my financial advisor?

The new decision tool allows you to enter specifics about your farm's finances. You will be asked to enter cost of production and financial measures that are unique to your operations. A trusted financial advisor can help you to identify these numbers and also interpret the results. Because MPP is a risk management tool, it is always wise to include a financial advisor in risk management decisions.

What should I bring?

  • Laptop or Portable Device (limited quantity will be available on-site).
  • Annual Milk Marketings (pounds shipped) for 2011, 2012, and 2013.
  • Financial Advisor
