The agenda includes a panel on solutions to ag plastics and recycling, followed by ideas to raise profits during low prices. A legislative update, and the dairy, beef and grain situation and outlook is also part of the agenda. Additional dates and locations include Perham on Wed., Feb. 17, at The Cactus, and Hutchinson on Thurs., Feb. 18 at the Crow River Winery. Read more.

Free Trade Agreements Generate $8.3 Billion for Dairy Farmers (Dairy Herd Management)

A study from the U.S. Dairy Export Council and the National Milk Producers Federation shows free trade agreements have generated $8.3 billion in additional dairy farm income in the last 10 years. Translated, the number means 34 cents per hundred higher average milk prices over that time, or about $75 per cow. The report takes into account expansion of demand, as well as any lower domestic demand caused by higher consumer prices. Read more.

New Resource Helps Predict Building Costs (Progressive Dairy)

The University of Wisconsin Extension Dairy Team has created a fact sheet to help estimate the cost of dairy farm projects. “Building Cost Estimates – Dairy Modernization” covers calf, heifer and cow barns, and various milking systems on a per unit basis. It also covers costs for individual items like frames, concrete, pens and stalls, and more, using 2015 costs. Read more.

2015 Cost of Milk Hauling Declines (AgWeb)

The average cost of milk hauling in the Upper Midwest fell by 1.5 cents in 2015, according to an economist with the Upper Midwest Federal Milk Marketing Order. The number represents a 9 percent decline from 2014. Minnesota’s weighted average price was 20.1 cents per hundred. Read more.
