To help dairy farmers stay competitive in the 21st century global marketplace, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture announced today that grants are available to help pay for dairy farm business plans.

Through funds appropriated during the 2001 special legislative session, the Dairy Development and Profitability Enhancement program was awarded $200,000 in grant dollars that will be distributed at up to $5,000 per dairy producer to cover half the cost of a comprehensive business plan that evaluates farm start-up, modernization and expansion.

Minnesota Agriculture Commissioner Gene Hugoson says these grants are a reinvestment in Minnesota's dairy community. "Long-term planning is critical to the success and competitiveness of any business venture, and reinvestment is key to the long-term viability of a business," Commissioner Hugoson said. "Reinvesting in our $3.6 billion dairy industry is important to its revitalization and rural economic development."

The Minnesota Dairy Business Planning Grant Program is modeled after Wisconsin's highly-successful Dairy 2020 Early Planning Grant program. Planning grants will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis. To receive a 'Dairy Business Planning Grant' application, call Project Consultant David Weinand at 651-201-6646, or mail 625 N Robert St, St. Paul, MN 55155.

This project was made possible with funding from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, as approved by the Special Session of the MN Legislature 2001.
