December 24th, 2004:
By now, I am sure many, if not all of you, have heard about the Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) outbreak in Washington.
A couple of years ago, Minnesota Milk, in partnership with the University of Minnesota and the Board of Animal Health, assembled a "Dairy Bio-Security" Action Item sheet. You can find the information on our website at www.mnmilk.org by clicking here. Go to our website and look for Dairy Bio-Security on the main page.
Please take extra precaution to protect your herd and your way of life.
Also, please be prepared for a response to media. Make them aware of the best management practices you use on your farm to provide the consumers with the highest quality food available.
Tested messages from Midwest Dairy Association:
Animal Care: Dairy cows must be healthy and well cared for in order to produce pure, wholesome milk.
Dairy farmers recognize that proper animal care practices help lead to the production of high quality milk.
Dairy farmers take care of their herds by providing a nutritious diet, good medical care and healthy living conditions.
Food Safety: Milk and dairy products undergo a number of safety, quality and sanitation procedures such as pasteurization, making them among the most highly regulated and safest foods available to consumers. |
