I-29 Moo University: Using data to make decisions for fly management around your dairy cattle webinar

The I-29 Moo University 2023 Dairy Webinar Series continues Thursday, May 18 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. CDT with a focus on using data to make decisions for fly management around your dairy cattle. The program will be presented by Dr. Rebecca Trout Fryxell, a Medical and Veterinary Entomologist at the University of Tennessee.
“Listeners will gain a better understanding of what fly control strategies are available to them by using data to form those strategies,” said Fred Hall, dairy specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach. Fryxell notes as many of us prepare for warmer months, flies will emerge and cause additional stress to dairy cattle. These pests cause health and welfare concerns including blood loss, decreased feed efficiency, decreased weight gain, and transmission of some nasty pathogens. This presentation will cover reasons why you should begin to make informed decisions regarding fly control and will provide you with different strategies to control those pests. Ultimately the decision is up to each producer or herd manager, but the decisions made over time may make it easier or harder to control those pests.
Dr. Rebecca Trout Fryxell is a Medical and Veterinary Entomologist at the University of Tennessee. As an associate professor in the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology she works with the public to manage mosquito transmission of La Crosse virus, works with veterinarians to manage Asian longhorned ticks, and works with producers to manage flies and ticks on their cattle. Dr Trout Fryxell earned degrees at Transylvania University, University of Kentucky, and University of Arkansas, and completed post-doctoral training at the University of California Davis. She is currently past chair of the USDA Regional Hatch Project (S1076: Fly Management in Animal Agriculture Systems and Impacts on Animal Health and Food Safety).
