Meet our Newest Minnesota Milk Staff Member, Lucas Sjostrom

Five days into employment at Midwest Dairy/ Minnesota Milk, my to-do list is long, as it should be in efforts to support dairy farmers in policy and government relations for Minnesota in my new position.

For those who don’t know me, I grew up on a dairy farm in Nicollet County, where my brother, Jacob, parents, Deb and Steve, and grandparents, Adrianne and Lowell, still work in partnership milking cows, growing cash crops and doing custom work. My mom works off the farm as postmaster in Winthrop, which is where I went to high school.

The University of Minnesota holds a place in my heart as I earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in animal (dairy) science there and also met my wife, Alise (Jennissen). We now live on Alise’s home farm in western Stearns County, where we milk about 200 cows and run a small cheese plant.

In my short career, I have covered both sides of dairy policy debates, working first for Rep. Collin Peterson in D.C. as an intern with the House Agriculture Committee. Later, I was based in Vermont working for Holstein Association USA in government relations and communications, and more recently in Wisconsin for Hoard’s Dairyman and here in Minnesota for Dairy Herd Management.

My work took me to dairy farms in more than 40 states and to several state capitol buildings, but I am glad to refocus on advancing awareness of Minnesota dairy’s many benefits on behalf of Midwest Dairy, and the agenda of Minnesota Milk wearing my Minnesota Milk hat.

- Lucas

NPDES Permit Reports Due March 1

The MPCA mailed postcards February 12 reminding that annual reports are due March 1 for livestock farms with National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System or State Disposal System permits. Forms are available on the MPCA feedlot program website. Links to the form are located on the feedlot program permits and forms webpage. Paper copies of the form may be requested by contacting the MPCA regional offices. Read more.

A letter has also been sent to feedlot owners and operators with permit coverage under the 2011-2016 general NPDES/State Disposal System (SDS) permit reminding them their current permit coverage expires on January 31. Feedlots with 1,000 animal units or more are required to have either the NPDES or the SDS permit. According to the law change in 2011, feedlots that are large CAFOs but below 1,000 animal units may choose to either apply for continued permit coverage, or, if they have no discharge, may decline the permit. If the latter, a notice of permit termination is requested. Read more.

Robots vs. Parlors Session is February 26 (U of M Extension)

University of Minnesota Extension is holding a workshop Friday, February 26, in Pierz to help dairy producers who are at a crossroads between putting in robots or building a parlor. The session, which runs from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Brickyard Bar and Banquet Hall, is meant for dairy producers and agribusiness partners who work with producers. It will cover design and layout, housing and economics, and includes a panel of local dairy producers. Learn more.

Don't Forget: Dairy Day at the Capitol March 16

Minnesota Milk’s Dairy Day at the Capitol is approaching quickly. Plan for this event on Wed., March 16, and consider using charter transportation provided from Sauk Centre and St. Cloud for those who can spend the entire day. This is an important day for dairy, with legislator visits, Ag and Environment Committee Hearings, and a private coordinated by Minnesota AgriGrowth Council. You can learn more and register at www.mnmilk.org/dairyday.

Spring Load Restrictions Begin Monday (Minn. Dept. of Transportation)

The Department of Transportation announced on Thursday that Winter Load Increases would end for the SOUTHEAST, SOUTH, and METRO FROST ZONES beginning on Monday, February 22. The SOUTH ZONE will also see Spring Road Restrictions beginning Monday morning. The map shows the south zone extending from southwest Minnesota north to U.S. Highway 12, East to I-35, and generally around the Metro Zone of the Hennepin County Line. Read more.
